    405_kentucky_2010.JPG

    During the workshop, we had the opportunity to photograph some of the exquisite horses that make Kentucky a horse lover’s paradise. I also was blessed to go out a few evenings after the workshop with my wonderful friend Shirley, and spend some time hanging out with herds of mares and foals. They are all so friendly and inquisitive, it was a treat to spend time with them!

    Do you just love the fuzzy ears of the one above?

    Photographers Notes: On my evening photo outings with Shirley, I experimented a lot with using my 85mm L lens at f1.2. It’s not a standard focal length for horses, but I like the results, and really love the almost 3D effect that f1.2 creates in a photo.

    We visited one of the barns during naptime. There’s was lots of lounging, and even some snoring going on. :)

    Emmy {portraits}

    Portrait of a woman in minneapolis

    This may seem like a funny photo to start this blog post with, but it’s the perfect place to start telling you Emmy’s story.

    Emmy is a fellow photographer and good friend of mine. Just over a year ago, Emmy weighed 60 pounds more than she does in this photo and was not in the amazing physical condition she is in now. I see her regularly through the winter months as part of a photographer’s group we coordinate together. It was really wonderful watching her get smaller, and smaller, and smaller…until she hit her goal weight, size, and fitness level – and looked like a million bucks! She and her husband are going to run in the Twin Cities Marathon in a few months. Emmy is truly an inspiration!

    Do you want to know her secret? Counting calories and working out. Yep, there is no magic pill. Just months and months of hard work and dedication to a goal. She’s helping me follow in her footsteps as best she can. I am not always easy to help, and am struggling to find the right balance in my life right now between work and, well, everything else. But she always encourages me to just take it one day at a time and tells me that I’m making changes for life, so it’s okay to do that gradually and reasonably.

    Emmy picked me to shoot her “after” photos and I was honored. We unknowingly picked an unfortunate rainy day for the session, but since it was just between friends, we went ahead with it and had fun in spite of the weather.

    Photographer’s Notes: Some people love to do photography in overcast weather, but I’m not one of them. I prefer to have lots of light to play with. But when faced with an overcast situation, the biggest challenge to overcome is getting enough light in people’s eyes, and not let them fall into shadows. Either find locations to shoot where overhead light is minimized, or keep their face towards where the sun is behind the clouds. If you need to, lighten up their eyes just a bit when you process the photos, but don’t overdo it. The goal should be to always keep people looking natural.

    Beka {portraits}

    Portrait of a woman at sunset in Minnesota

    I’ve been so excited to share these photos of my friend Beka. She is from North Carolina, but spent a long weekend with me, working as my second shooter at two weddings, and getting a taste of the beauty and culture of Minnesota. Check out her photography site – Tirzah Photography – she is really talented and will start shooting her own weddings next year and is doing portrait sessions now. If you are in the Charlotte area and are looking for a creative, fun photographer, definitely keep her in mind! And make sure you read her post about her visit to MN – “I Went to Minnesota – You Betcha!”

    As part of her visit, I took her out to my friend Sandra’s beautiful farm in St. Bonifacious. Beka loves the country and wide open spaces, and I thought this would be a great location to do her session. I kept it a surprise until we drove up the driveway. :) Thank you Sandra, for the use of your farm and for your hospitality!

    Beka is working on a CD called “Colour” (listen to her current music here), so we bought some fabric to play around with for some of the photos. She may or may not use these photos for the CD, but they are seriously some of my favorite photos ever. :D

    Beka is one of my best friends and I truly love photographing her.

    Photographer’s Notes: In the fabric/sunset photos, I used a shutter speed of 1/50th of a second to capture motion, which still having parts of the scene in focus. The above image was one of those things you can’t predict when working with motion, her head was still when I clicked the shutter, so I got her face in focus!

    I don’t usually use props – but Bekah seriously loves cherries. :)
