    Alyssa {portraits}

    Alyssa and I have been friends for well over 10 years now. Because we live 1 1/2 hours apart, we don’t get to see each other as much as we’d like, but whenever we do, we just pick right up where we left off.

    I adore this girl! She has always been able to make me laugh and has such a joy about her. At the same time, we can talk about deeper things, like our faith and the difficult struggles of life. The weather wasn’t terribly cooperative, but the main goal of the evening was to spend time together, catching up and just enjoying each other’s presence. The photography was a side-effect. A really fun side-effect. :)

    Photographer’s Notes: I asked Alyssa if I could photograph her. I have had a revelation recently about one of my primary motivations for photographing people, and the reason why I like to photograph my friends. For me, photography is how I love show love to people. This idea occurred to me one day when I saw a friend’s status on Facebook (not Alyssa, a different friend). She was down and my first inclination was that I wanted to photograph her. I was a little surprised at my response, but it led me to understand that when I have my camera pointed at someone, I am not just taking their photo, but rather speaking a language of love to them. I am telling them that they are valued and I am honoring them with my time, my passion, and with the care I take to photograph them in a way that shows them back to themselves as truly beautiful. I will probably write more about this in the future, once I feel I have more of the pieces assembled into a larger picture.

    I’ve long envied Alyssa’s great head of curls! I insisted she leave it curly for the session. :)

    Aric and Aftan {wedding}

    It feels so good to be getting caught up with my blog! Next week, I’ll be sharing my photos from Kentucky. So if you prefer horses to weddings, hang in there! :)

    Aftan and Aric have some kind of connection to weather. You might remember them from the crazy weather for their engagement session last year with the double rainbow and amazing pink sunset. Well, their wedding day was not too different!

    Aric and Aftan had planned a June outdoor wedding in the backyard of Aftan’s home in Clara City, MN. Their friends and family had worked for months preparing the site, and I am sure everyone was praying for a sunny day! Well, the morning started out with rain. Lots and lots of dreary rain falling from grey skies. My heart sank a bit.

    When I got there, everyone was in good spirits. Aftan’s grandpa called and said he believed the rain would end just in time for the ceremony and not to worry. He’s an old farmer, and the family says he’s always right about the weather. The good news? He was right! After just a few rain drops as the processional started, the sky gradually cleared, and the sun came out. It was glorious!

    I like to take couples out for sunset photos if it works into the schedule of the day, so around sunset, we went outside and it didn’t look good for actual sun at sunset. The filter light through a bank of clouds was pretty though, so we took portraits in tall grass with pretty soft light and purple flowers in the background. But then…yep, you guessed it…the sun shone through! It was out just long enough to create some beautiful, warm, back-lit portraits.

    You will see in the details collage, glasses of a red beverage in them. Aric’s family owns the Hinterland Vinyards in Clara City. Just following the ceremony, there was a short cocktail hour at the house where guests enjoyed Sangria from their vineyard!

    Photographer’s Notes: I have a mentor named Sergio. He’s an phenomenal photographer and teacher. He gave me a tremendous gift earlier this year when he challenged me to keep an open mind about weddings. To not to try anticipate the day too much, good or bad, leave my mind and heart open to just go with the flow. Getting upset because things aren’t going like you had planned hinders the creative process. On a day like the one we had for this wedding, this was critical to me being able to create unique images that told the story of Aftan and Aric’s day!

    It was still raining when Aftan and Aric’s first meeting was to happen. There was a church in town that was their backup location and they had wanted some photos there anyway, so we did their first meeting there.

    Emmy {portraits}

    Posted in: Uncategorized

    Portrait of a woman in minneapolis

    This may seem like a funny photo to start this blog post with, but it’s the perfect place to start telling you Emmy’s story.

    Emmy is a fellow photographer and good friend of mine. Just over a year ago, Emmy weighed 60 pounds more than she does in this photo and was not in the amazing physical condition she is in now. I see her regularly through the winter months as part of a photographer’s group we coordinate together. It was really wonderful watching her get smaller, and smaller, and smaller…until she hit her goal weight, size, and fitness level – and looked like a million bucks! She and her husband are going to run in the Twin Cities Marathon in a few months. Emmy is truly an inspiration!

    Do you want to know her secret? Counting calories and working out. Yep, there is no magic pill. Just months and months of hard work and dedication to a goal. She’s helping me follow in her footsteps as best she can. I am not always easy to help, and am struggling to find the right balance in my life right now between work and, well, everything else. But she always encourages me to just take it one day at a time and tells me that I’m making changes for life, so it’s okay to do that gradually and reasonably.

    Emmy picked me to shoot her “after” photos and I was honored. We unknowingly picked an unfortunate rainy day for the session, but since it was just between friends, we went ahead with it and had fun in spite of the weather.

    Photographer’s Notes: Some people love to do photography in overcast weather, but I’m not one of them. I prefer to have lots of light to play with. But when faced with an overcast situation, the biggest challenge to overcome is getting enough light in people’s eyes, and not let them fall into shadows. Either find locations to shoot where overhead light is minimized, or keep their face towards where the sun is behind the clouds. If you need to, lighten up their eyes just a bit when you process the photos, but don’t overdo it. The goal should be to always keep people looking natural.
