    Freedom Farm Polo Fundraiser {equine}

    On a very warm Saturday afternoon, I donated my time to Freedom Farm, a therapeutic riding program in Watertown MN, by photographing their polo fundraiser. I had never been to a polo match, so I was pretty excited to photograph these athletes, and help out a worthy cause.

    I also got the sunburn of the year. It hurt for over a week! I’m kind of dangerous to myself when I’m engaged in photography. I forget about things like re-applying sunscreen.

    The horses were worked so hard! Riders had 3-4 horses and would swap them out between chuckers.

    The action got pretty intense at times!

    The horses are pretty bendy…

    Storms started to roll in near the end. There was damage in the area from strong winds within an hour of everyone leaving the grounds.

    Lynette and Mijo {equine}

    One of my greatest joys as a photographer is capturing the beautiful bond people have with their horses. When I arrived at this session with Lynette and her arabian gelding, Mijo, I knew that this would be one of those sessions. Mijo is a sweet, attentive, gentle horse…very much like Lynette. They have a strong friendship that was easy to photograph. He is also handsome, and showed off his great looks throughout the session.

    When Lynette saw her photos, she had this to say:

    Shelley I absolutely love my photos! They are exquisite. I can’t stop looking through the entire gallery, and each time I have another group of favorites. You truly have a gift, thank you for sharing it with me!

    Thank you, Lynette and Mijo, for sharing a beautiful evening with me and letting me document the great relationship you have!

    The daughter of one of Lynette’s friends was our helper for the evening. She has a special bond with Mijo too.

    During the workshop, we had the opportunity to photograph some of the exquisite horses that make Kentucky a horse lover’s paradise. I also was blessed to go out a few evenings after the workshop with my wonderful friend Shirley, and spend some time hanging out with herds of mares and foals. They are all so friendly and inquisitive, it was a treat to spend time with them!

    Do you just love the fuzzy ears of the one above?

    Photographers Notes: On my evening photo outings with Shirley, I experimented a lot with using my 85mm L lens at f1.2. It’s not a standard focal length for horses, but I like the results, and really love the almost 3D effect that f1.2 creates in a photo.

    We visited one of the barns during naptime. There’s was lots of lounging, and even some snoring going on. :)
