What can I say about Alli that you won’t see in these photos! She is bubbly and fun and this session was a BLAST! I brought a few young photographers along with me when I photographed Alli, and mentored them in how to work with light, location, and a super cute model. :)

Alli would be a senior at Buffalo High School this year, but she’s a smarty pants and is taking post-secondary classes at a college instead!

Photographer’s Notes: My goal with any portrait session is to create a relaxed atmosphere where the person I am photographing can relax and just be themselves. I put people in good light and location, then give some direction as far as posing. This helps them feel confident that I’m working to make them look their best in the photos. Then we just talk, and laugh, and enjoy spending time together.

I’m not above being really silly to get people laughing. How I did it at this point in the session will remain between Alli and I. ;)

I met Bethany a few years ago when we spent three months in Kansas City. I taught a photography class and she was one of my students. We really connected with each other and I told her mom she was going to have to live without Bethany, because I was taking her home with me! That didn’t quite work out, but Bethany did spend a week with me a few summers ago. So when it came time for her senior photos, I know I HAD to be the one to do them.

The session was all that I had hoped for. I was able to capture a range of emotions, from the fun, silly side of Bethany, to the more serious, pensive side, that maybe not everyone gets to see. This is such a pivotal time in young people’s lives and it goes by so fast. It’s an incredible honor to be able to document it this way.

Photographer’s Notes: The day was windy, and I wasn’t sure what kind of challenge that would create for us. It truly worked in our favor. She wore this great purple dress that a friend had made for her which blew elegantly in the wind. We had to be careful which was she was facing so that the wind didn’t blow her hair across her face. The photos near the end were taken after the sun went down. I shot most of of them using my ultra-fast 1.2 lenses at 1600 ISO and the lowest shutter speeds I could get away with. I actually really like that time of day when the sun has just set, the light is very soft, but still has some presence to it.

Abbi was one of the most fun people I have ever photographed! She has very high energy, is creative, silly, and game for anything! We clicked right away and our session with her and her horse Lotus was pure fun. Afterwards, Abbi’s family invited me to dinner at the Ox Yoke Inn – some of the best food you will find in Minnesota. The whole evening was a treat!

Abbi was so sweet to take the time to write me and let me know how she felt about her photos:
“Thank you so much for taking my senior pictures. I love them all so much!!! All of them are so beautiful!!!!!!!!!! I think that you are an amazing photographer and I really am glad I met you, you are a wonderful person! ” Ditto Abbi, Ditto!
