Ben and Jacqui are friends of ours from the small house church we attend (which has now moved to a building, because we’re growing, but we’re all still calling it house church!) They are getting married next May and I get to be their wedding photographer! I am really looking forward to their wedding because Ben is a musician and Jacqui is an artist, and I think their wedding will be exceptionally beautiful and creative.

The weather wasn’t very cooperative for pretty much all of October, but a cool, cloudy day didn’t dampen their spirits and I like the way their photos feel – warm and intimate, in spite of the weather. We did the session at one of my favorite locations, Lake Maria State Park in Monticello. The challenge for me in using the same location multiple times is trying to use it differently each time. My approach for this session was to lay down any preconceived notions about what images I want to create, and just let things unfold naturally so that the images are not contrived, but truly reflect the couple and their relationship. Even though I usually am a pretty open-minded, let people be themselves kind of photographer, I still found it a challenge not to impose my own ideas on the session. I loved the result and will be working towards doing this more and more.

Jacqui’s ring incorporates a leaf, so when we found this huge leaf, we though it would be fun to photograph the ring on it!

I was so excited when the sun FINALLY came out in October for this session with Rick and Jane Archer. I was even more excited when I show up to the barn where they board their horses and saw the lovely couple and beautiful Saddlebred horses I would have to work with!

After the session, Rick sent me this great email that just blessed my socks off!:

“Thank you so much for the time you spent with us, and the ‘beautiful fruit of your labors’. Jane has a great background in research, and she was looking for the most talented photographer that specialized in horses. Working with you that day was fun, but after seeing your work, I can readily see that Jane found what she was looking for. You have an amazing eye for the subject, and the backgrounds that you managed to find made these photos come to life. You also managed to understand, and capture the essence of our horses uniquely different personalities. All I can say is Wow!… and of course THANK YOU.”

Abbi was one of the most fun people I have ever photographed! She has very high energy, is creative, silly, and game for anything! We clicked right away and our session with her and her horse Lotus was pure fun. Afterwards, Abbi’s family invited me to dinner at the Ox Yoke Inn – some of the best food you will find in Minnesota. The whole evening was a treat!

Abbi was so sweet to take the time to write me and let me know how she felt about her photos:
“Thank you so much for taking my senior pictures. I love them all so much!!! All of them are so beautiful!!!!!!!!!! I think that you are an amazing photographer and I really am glad I met you, you are a wonderful person! ” Ditto Abbi, Ditto!
