I was looking through my equine photos the other day and realized I never posted these! They were taken during a mentoring session I did at my friend Susan’s farm in Wisconsin. We had a beautiful evening for shooting the horses were just so photogenic! Susan is also one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. I laugh until my face hurts when I’m around her.

Susan recently donated this horse to a therapeutic riding program. He’ll do great there!

I love the way that appaloosas have lots of spots on their noses.

Three horses looking my way with ears up – not an easy task!

Susan’s horses really love her. She has a wonderful way with them.

Susan has two very pretty Lassie-dogs. I’ve secretly always wanted one.

I wanted to give you all ample time to plan for this one. It should be a really fun day with lots of great learning opportunities.

Mark you calendar for Picturing on Saturday March 28th! Picturing is in its ninth year.  It is a day of photography filled with many events. This year is bigger and better than ever.

The morning to late afternoon is filled with photography workshops at the Franklin Arts Center. Registration begins at 8:00am with classes starting at 9:00am. 1001 Kingwood Street Brainerd, MN 56401

This years speakers are diverse and very talented.  Presentations include:

Craig Blacklock (yeah, for real, I’m speaking at the same conference as Craig Blacklock!)
Craig will discuss his latest book on Lake Superior followed by an hour of how-to conversation about fine art and nature photography.

    Shelley Paulson (<- that’s me!)
Shelley will teach how to create powerful natural light portraits and images in just about any environment.

Jeff Korte (totally looking forward to his presentation, have always wanted to explore film.)
In a photography world filled with mega pixels, Jeff will share his techniques of using traditional film and pinhole cameras.

The Photoshop Challenge – Back by popular demand three Photoshop experts compete head to head in an imaging battle.  See first hand how three different photographers execute their vision from identical images with computer and mouse in hand.

When I have more info about registering, I will post it on my blog, but for now, you can email Biff Ulm for registration information.

If you are not a photographer but appreciate art and those that appreciate it, please join us the evening of the 28th for a reception in Franklin Art Center’s Gallery 119 celebrating Picturing’s exhibiting artists and the Crossing Arts Alliance’s photographer of the year recipient.

Past years exhibitors should have received the registration packet in the mail.  If not, email Biff Ulm for forms and information. They encourage anyone with an interest in photography to exhibit. There is still time to submit work with the deadline approaching fast. In addition to wonderful prizes, it is a great show that highlights a diverse body of work and individuals

I have several photographer by whom I am really inspired, one being Marcus Bell from Australia. I became familiar with him through a video series I subscribe to called “PhotoVision“. It’s a series of videos where they and follow successful photographer as they shoot and interview them afterward. There are also studio tours, which are pretty cool too. If you want to learn photographer, I highly recommend these videos. They are normally $149 for a year, but if you use the code EDPIERCE when you check out, they are only $39.

Okay, so back to Marcus. I subscribe to his blog and he had a recent post about a vow renewal he photographed of a couple who had been married for 50 years. The photographs he took at the renewal are beautiful and full of emotions. At the end of the blog post, though, there were several things that grabbed me. The couple received a photograph Marcus had taken as a gift. He writes this about the moment they saw it:

The defining moment of the night. It will also be a moment that I will also personally always remember.

Freda & Artemio where presented with a special gift at the end of the night, a framed family portrait. It is the words that Artemio said out loud when he held the frame up to view the image for the first time, “This is what life is all about…. my whole life is here between my hands”

It reminded me again of why I do what I do.

At the end of the blog entry, Marcus shares this tidbit with photographers:

The complete coverage was captured with only available light, no flash or other light sources where used to capture any of these images. This ensured that the family and guests could emmerse themselves in the moment and never felt like they where ever being photographed.

It reminded me again of why I do it the way I do.

My commitment to natural light photography isn’t about being afraid of flashes and studio lights. It’s about wanting to be able to photograph people and moments in a way that is so natural that they forget about the camera and go back to just being themselves.
