Jeff Murphy is a long time architectural photography client of mine. I did a quick family session for him and his wife so they could have Christmas card photos. They live less than a mile from me. Considering most of my work is at least a half hour from home, it is fun to have such a great family to photograph so close to home!

Photo tip: When photographing someone on a swing, pre-focus on them at one point in the swing, then when they come back to that point, take your shot! Using ai servo mode can help too. The camera will try to anticipate the point of focus when a subject is in motion. I have found the prefocus method to be more accurate, though.

I hope you like horse photos, because I’m about to go on an equine photo blogging binge.

For the last couple of months, I’ve been very busy photographing horses. I have started to sell my equine photos to various magazines and needed to build up a library of images, especially with the beautiful fall colors we have around here. Magazines will be looking for fall photos next summer, so I have to plan ahead! I was also looking to take some more photos for my fine art collection I am working on.

I put out a request on a mailing list whose subscribers would be likely to have nice barns and horses. I asked if anyone wanted free photos in exchange for tidying up their horses, helping during the session, and signing a model release. I had a great response! I was not able to get to all the barns this fall, but am hoping to get to more after the snow falls. One lovely side-benefit of this project is I have made some wonderful new horsey friends and got to kiss some new horsey noses. :-D

Another great benefit was that I had the opportunity to practice and experiment with each session because I was not needing to shoot to please a client. I love shooting to please clients, but I believe that practice when not in that mindset frees my mind a bit to try new things with all the successes and failures that come along with experimentation. The things I learn that work well can then be applied to client sessions. I highly recommend practice!!!

The first barn I visited was owned by Lucy. She has three very nice horses and a rustic barn. The weather was beautiful until about an hour before the session, but I made the most of it!

I had the idea before arriving that if her barn had good light inside, that I would like to apply some of my window light portrait techniques to horses.

I think this mare has beautiful bone structure in her face and a very soft eye.

Horse and people connection photos are very popular. I was happy Lucy was willing to be in some of the photos!

I used a slow shutter technique where I pan with the horse’s motion to try and get parts of the image in relative focus. This is one of the best panning shots I’ve ever taken.
