My approach to engagement sessions is pretty simple: create an environment that feels so relaxed that couples forget I’m there and just act like they’re on a date! Mark and Tegen had so much fun cuddling and enjoying this “almost-alone” time, at one point Tegen looked at me and asked “do all couples kiss this much?” I laughed and said it does happen quite a bit! I try not to prompt kissing anymore unless the couple is a little more shy, then I might suggest it once or twice, but I really want people to be authentic in front of my lens, so I mostly just let people be themselves and capture that.

We did this session at Nuremberg Gardens on Lake Minnetonka. I had only photographed there once before, and I found it to be a very inspiring location! The evening light was just beautiful. I feel like I fall in love with the beauty of Minnesota more and more every year.

Here’s what Tegen said about our session:

“Hi Shelley – this is so exciting, we love the way the photos turned out! Nice job!!! I really like the one’s in front of the pink flowers and the ones under the wooden trellis . I can’t wait to see what you do for our wedding!”

    Me either! :)

Photographer’s Note: When shooting backlit portraits like the one above, I expose for the faces. Most of the time, I underexpose their faces just a little and then lighten them up in my post-processing. The goal when shooting is to get the most out of my raw files, so that may mean that the image doesn’t come out the camera perfectly exposed, but with the most information to work with to create the final image I have in mind.

This sweet couple gets married this weekend, so I thought it would be a good idea to blog their photos this week! :)

Brandon and Rachel are some of the sweetest people I’ve met in awhile. We spent a lovely evening laughing together while taking photos in an area in Minneapolis by the Mississippi river, including the iconic Stone Arch Bridge.

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, Joanna’s face will be familiar to you. She’s one of my best friends and probably the person I most love to photograph.

I remember when she came to photograph a wedding with me in Minnesota last year, we sat and looked at a slideshow of wedding photos and talked about “someday, when she got married.” Within less than a year, that someday became next Saturday! I get to be her wedding photographer and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I just love her fiancé Jason May (known to most as JMay, whose rap music is awesome) and think they are a great match in so many ways.

I traveled to Kansas City in March to photograph a wedding (blog post coming later this week), and thought that would be a good time to do Joanna and JMay’s e-session as well. Who would have thought that on March 20th, in Kansas City, there would be a snowstorm that would drop 9+ inches of snow, right at the time we were to do our session. We made the most of it and shot inside at Union Station and the City Market area.

Photography Notes: While finding great available light to work with indoors can be tricky, it’s not impossible. I used a lot of window light, some funky colored lighting that was being used in an exhibit, and we even ventured outdoors and got that beautiful, pure light that comes with snow falling. As a photographer, I am always looking for ways to improve and grow, so I give myself assignments each year. Last year, I focused heavily on composition. This year, I am focusing on becoming better at capturing great “moments” between people. It means that I am having to slow down, be more patient, be ready to click the shutter when moments unfold in front of me, and then shoot through the moment, being sure I don’t take my camera away from my eye too soon and miss the best part.
